Residential Courses at Halsway Manor

For 60 years, Halsway Manor has supported the practice of traditional folk arts through residential weekend or midweek courses. We enrich lives through inspirational experiences created by expert tutors from all over the world.

Most courses at Halsway run either midweek (Monday - Friday) or over a weekend (Friday - Sunday). Individual course pages show the check-in and check-out times for that course or holiday.

Why Halsway?

.
An impromptu dance and session in the Library

A home-from-home

Participants rarely come to Halsway only once - they cherish the new friends that they make here and the community of folk artists that Halsway attracts.

An unrivalled range of courses

We run a diverse programme of mid-week and weekend courses in folk music, song, dance, musicianship, art, storytelling, wellbeing and instrument making, all year long.

A stunning location

Set in the glorious Quantock Landscape, our Grade 2*-listed medieval manor offers a unique space in which to learn, away from the distractions and rigmaroles of daily life.

How do our courses work?

Course timetables

Courses usually follow broadly the same structure and you’ll often be sent a timetable in advance. Whilst every tutor will tailor their programme to make the best use of time, you can see the outline schedule that tutors and hosts often start from with when they plan their timetable. These will help you understand how days at Halsway run, but are for guidance only - every course will naturally be slightly differently.

Halsway Manor with blue skies and a may pole.

We have a range of work and relaxation spaces within the Manor and Mews. Most big group work takes place in the Long Room, with smaller groups using the Bar and the Brendon Room over in the Mews, which can also be converted to a workshop space for craft and art courses.

At the back of the house, the dedicated dining room allows refreshments and meals to be served without disturbing other activities. The licensed bar, which serves local ales and cider, as well as wine, spirits and soft drinks, is open in the evenings, and in the winter enjoys the benefit of an open fire, as does the Main Hall. Through the bar is our library, full of folk-related treasures, and open to all guests while they’re on site. The Manor is set in six acres of grounds and gardens with direct access to the Quantocks National Landscape. It’s also an easily accessible base from which to explore the coastal and inland countryside of West Somerset.

Meals

Meals are prepared each day by our dedicated team of chefs. Dinners are booked in advance and cooked to order so that we can minimise food waste. Although we cannot cater to individual likes and dislikes, we take dietary requirements very seriously. If you tell us in advance that you have specific needs, the chef on duty will prepare a meal for you, taking these into account.

Here’s an example of what you’ll find on offer:

  • Breakfast
Fruit juice, cereals, fruit, toast and preserves, plus cooked breakfast.

  • Lunch
Quiche with a selection of salads, and fresh fruit,

  • Dinner
Choice of two mains - one meat or fish-based, and one meat-free, plus a choice of two desserts.

Please note that, unless you have told us you can’t or don’t eat meat, there isn’t an option on the first evening as we begin preparations before you arrive and only prepare meat-free mains for those on our dietary restrictions list.

Wi-fi

If we had a pound for every time we were asked about connectivity at Halsway… we’d have a lot of pounds!

Wifi is usually available in the Bar and Main Hall. We say ‘usually’, because sometimes our remote location affects our connection to the internet, and if there’s no Wifi, it’s out of our control. We can’t get online in the office either, if it’s any consolation!

We also get a lot of questions about why we don’t put wifi in the bedrooms and the Mews. There are a couple of reasons for this conscious choice:

  • Getting a signal all the way around the house and across the car park would only be worthwhile if we knew we could provide a really reliable connection in every room, which we can’t guarantee.

  • And more importantly, we want Halsway to continue to be a place where you can shut off the outside world, properly meet and get to know other people, and where socialising reigns supreme. So no sneaking off to watch Netflix!
