A weekend exploring the wonderful choreography of Gary Roodman, whose dance compositions have captivated English Country Dancers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Focusing purely on Gary’s dances – from contra dances through to the vibrant and more stately compositions of his modern Playford-style dances – this is a challenging weekend of dance aimed at relatively experienced English Country Dancers.

Gary Roodman (a dancer of ‘International’ dances for many years) discovered English & American dance when he attended Pinewoods Camp in Massachusetts with his family for the first time in 1976. He states ‘That experience changed my life forever’. Since his first publication ‘Calculated Figures’ in 1987 Gary has produced another 10 collections of dances (now totalling over 160 dances). The music used is frequently by famous classical composers, but also modern composers and in particular collaborations with Jonathan Jensen, a bassist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

The weekend will commence with an evening dance on the Friday, continues with morning workshops & an evening dance on Saturday, with further workshops & a farewell dance on the Sunday afternoon.

Who’s it For

This is a challenging – but enjoyable – weekend of dance aimed at relatively experienced English Country Dancers, but it’s ok if you’re new to Roodman!

The Team

John & Hilary Turner have been leading country dance holidays & dance weekends for many years. John has been a dance leader/caller for almost 40 years and has called at most of the UK’s folk dance festivals as well as on holidays in Europe, the USA & New Zealand.

Pete & Sue Hall are an accordion and recorder duo from Fareham who have been playing for dancing for as long as John has been calling – (the three often work together at dance clubs in southern England.)  Over the years they have played for a range of dance events and clubs, as well as spending a short time playing for display dancing at festivals.

Pete and Sue particularly enjoy the variety of musical styles that Gary has chosen to fit his dances, ranging from classical to modern compositions, and always try to provide a danceable sound at a pace suited to the capabilities of the dancers.
