A course of classes for accordion players wanting to improve their playing, led by Paul Hutchinson. The piano accordion is a hugely versatile instrument, popular across many musical genres the world over; Paul’s classes will have an emphasis on the English folk tradition exploring simple methods to enhance your existing repertoire.
These once-a-month workshops are for beginners, though to intermediate/advanced level players, in small groups with ‘home-work’ to aid your progression between classes. Classes will be taught using music so the ability to read ‘the dots’ is an advantage, especially if joining one of the more advanced classes.
Who’s it For?
You will need to be able to read music for this course.
Level 1, 10-11.30am: You’re just starting out as an accordion player. You have your own instrument, have perhaps had a lesson or two, or maybe you’ve been having a go at home. An ability to read music is an advantage, as is prior keyboard knowledge.
Level 2, 11.45am-1.15pm: You’ll know your way around the right hand and have an understanding of the left hand layout too. You’ll be playing with two hands together, albeit at a gentle pace. You’ll be wanting to learn new tunes and techniques, but needing to keep the pace steady.
Level 3/4, 2-3.30pm: You can master a new tune, both hands together, quickly and confidently. You are becoming familiar with counter-basses, short bass runs and can reliably jump from the C row to the A row for example. You’ll be wanting to learn new tunes and styles whilst focusing on musicality, and working at a faster pace.
Please note that classes are progressive; it is strongly recommended that all classes are attended within each term.

Paul Hutchinson studied piano and church organ before being persuaded at the age of 17 to take up the accordion and form a ceilidh band. Since then he’s become one of the best-known and in demand players on the folk scene – in the UK and beyond – as one half of duo Belshazzar’s Feast, with trio Hoover the Dog, Pagoda Project (with Karen Wimhurst), and PLF.
Paul is a regular tutor and musician at Halsway Manor, and also teaches at Marlborough College, Benslow Music Centre, Folkworks Summer Schools, and at Cecil Sharp House.
