We’re delighted to welcome back Rowan Rheingans, Hannah James, and Hazel Askew – collectively known as Lady Maisery – to lead a second singing weekend at Halsway as our 2017 Artists in Residence following their sold-out weekend in Spring. Come and spend the weekend singing with them in the beautiful and inspiring setting of Halsway Manor!

Learn new songs and arrangements of Lady Maisery songs, and try new techniques to stretch and challenge. Experiment with harmony, have a go at improvisation and enjoy the feeling and sound of singing in a large group – as well as having time to work in smaller ones. Bring songs to share in informal evening sessions, sing outdoors (weather permitting), and delve into the collection of folk song resources at Halsway Manor.

Who’s it For?

The course will have some flexibility, and elements can be tailored so that everyone will take away something useful from the weekend.

The Team

In an English folk scene currently bursting with bold and innovative folk music, vocal trio Lady Maisery shine brightly. With their unique approach to harmony singing, intelligent and thoughtful arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions, Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans harness and celebrate their united voice. Whether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences, Lady Maisery are skilful explorers of the power, beauty and vitality of song

Underpinning every performance are Lady Maisery’s distinctive harmonies: sometimes lush and rich, sometimes dark and invigorating, they intertwine with assured precision. The trio also breaks new ground as one of the first UK groups to explore the tradition of ‘diddling’ or mouth music, which has nearly died out in England, but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe.
