Delve into the wonderful world of klezmer with members of the London Klezmer Quartet. Ilana Cravitz (violin), Susi Evans (clarinet and accordion) and Indra Buraczewska (double bass & vocals) will take you deep into freylekhs, bulgars, zhoks, khosidls and terkishers, looking at the modes, ornamentation and rhythms that characterise traditional Eastern European Jewish folk music. Play in a klezmer band, be part of the ever-growing Halsway Klezmer Kapelye (big band), and learn steps for the dances that the music traditionally accompanies. Reading music is not essential as we’ll be working by ear quite a bit, but we will also look at interpreting written music. All instruments are welcome. For players of grade 4 and above or equivalent.
Who’s it For?
This is a course for musicians – players of grade 4 and above or equivalent – to explore playing klezmer (it’s ok if you’re new to klezmer). The ability to read music would be useful though not essential; we’ll be working by ear quite a bit, but we will also look at interpreting written music. All instruments are welcome.
“An inspiring – and fun! – weekend. I was completely new to klezmer, and enjoyed learning with musicians from different backgrounds. Next year can’t come soon enough!” Participant
The London Klezmer Quartet is a dynamic group of performers whose deep understanding of klezmer, the celebratory and soulful music of Eastern European Jews, is reflected in exuberant, passionate and accomplished performances that captivate audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
The group plays old and new traditional material guaranteed to move audiences from toe-tapping to tears and back again in moments.
LKQ was formed in 2009 by a group of klezmer specialists keen to explore the almost-lost wedding music tradition of Jewish eastern Europe. The band was swiftly picked up by some of the UK’s foremost folk & world music promoters – Songlines Magazine, Continental Drifts and The Magpie’s Nest offered stages for the group’s unique combination of artistry and exuberance.
The band has played UK venues and festivals including Kings Place, The Green Note, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Cafe Oto, Southbank Centre, Rich Mix, The Vortex Jazz Club, Songlines Festival and Blysh Festival. LKQ is part of rural touring schemes in Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wales, and the band is a firm favourite with charity ‘Music in Hospitals’, as well as a new recruit to Breathe Arts Health Research’s roster of artists. In 2012/13 they also performed in Norwich, Eastbourne, Colchester, Hastings, Cambridge.
