Led by Charlotte Ewart with music from Chris Green, Richard Heacock and Matthew Coatsworth, the Halsway Playford Weekend promises to a be stimulating and enjoyable experience!

A vigorous and fun weekend of dancing, the course is aimed at dancers – both experienced and new to Playford are welcome – who want to explore the music and dances published in the English Dancing Master. The weekend does not aim to be a historical re-enactment (though costume is welcome – and especially encouraged for the Saturday night Ball) but will combine practical classes on technique and repertoire, performance and presentation, with some time to reflect on the wider historical context of the Playford collections. Plus of course there will be ample opportunity to put your learning into practice during sociable dances – including a Playford Assembly Ball on the Saturday evening – all set to beautiful live music from the trio of Chris Green, Richard Heacock and Matthew Coatsworth.

Who’s it For?

The course is aimed at those with some experience of dance, although no specific experience of the Playford dances is necessary.

The Team

Charlotte Ewart is a performer, teacher, movement director and researcher. She is a fully qualified teacher and works freelance on heritage and education projects. Currently she is an Associate Artist for Historic Royal Palaces working as their movement director for the live performance events.

Charlotte trained in ISTD and RAD technique, has a joint honours degree in History and Dance, an MA in Dance (her MA thesis focusing on issues of authenticity in dance recreation) and also studied acting at RADA. She found her way into Historical dance and choreography 15 years ago after a bizarre audition (you can ask her!) and has since choreographed and consulted on projects and dance reconstructions from the 12th – 17th centuries.

Sounds a bit academic? Well pigeon-hole her as a Historical Dance fuddy-duddy at your peril! She’s bubbly, energetic, knowledgeable and funny, with an infectious passion for dancing that she loves to share. Also patient and democratic; there’s always room for discussion and a respectful attention to everyone’s point of view – even if she doesn’t agree!

You’ll recognise our house band of Matthew Coatsworth, Chris Green and Richard Heacock if you’ve attended on of our ‘Dances of Poldark’ Weekends; all three have proudly appeared in Series One and Two of ‘Poldark’, and they make a fantastically danceable period sound. Matthew (violin) also plays in Boldwood. Chris (guitar) plays in The Playford Liberation Front and GreenMatthews. Richard (violin) recorded the dance music for ‘Poldark’, also plays in Boldwood, and is a regular tutor (with Paul Hutchinson and Karen Wimhurst) on the successful ‘Playing Playford’ courses at Halsway.
