Led by Rhodri Davies with music from The Warleggan Village Band (Chris Green, Richard Heacock and Matthew Coatsworth), the Halsway Playford Weekend promises to a be stimulating and enjoyable experience!
A vigorous and fun weekend of dancing, the course is aimed at dancers – both experienced and new to Playford are welcome – who want to explore the music and dances published in the English Dancing Master.
In a change to the original programme, your dancing master will be Rhodri Davies. Rhodri is a hugely experienced and popular caller across various genres of folk dance including Playford. He leads several courses at Halsway, but this will be his first time at the helm of the Halsway Playford, something he’s very much looking forward to! Expect a varied programme of workshops and social dancing, aimed at interpreting the dances for a modern audience with enthusiasm and enjoyment, whilst also setting the dances in historical context and referring back to the original sources.
There will be a Playford Assembly Ball on the Saturday evening – costume strongly encouraged! – all set to beautiful live music from the trio of Chris Green, Richard Heacock and Matthew Coatsworth.
Who’s it For?
The course is aimed at those with some experience of dance, although no specific experience of the Playford dances is necessary.
Rhodri Davies is well known as a regular caller on the UK Folk Festival scene. While he may be best known for calling American style dances he has always incorporated Playford dances into mixed programmes and even ceilidhs. He has also run workshops on this style at festivals including Chippenham. He was first introduced to the Playford collection at his university society where it was customary to attempt to call dances from the original texts! Having been brought up near the site of one of the final battles of the Civil War he is fascinated by the historical context of the Playford collection, but also seeks simple interpretations suitable for modern dancers. He believes these dances should be approached with enthusiasm and enjoyment. He will be attempting to combine all these elements for this weekend.
You’ll recognise The Warleggan Village Band – Matthew Coatsworth, Chris Green and Richard Heacock if you’ve attended one of our ‘Dances of Poldark’ Weekends; all three have proudly appeared in Series One and Two of ‘Poldark’, and they make a fantastically danceable period sound. Matthew (violin) also plays in Boldwood. Chris (guitar) plays in The Playford Liberation Front and GreenMatthews. Richard (violin) recorded the dance music for ‘Poldark’, also plays in Boldwood, and is a regular tutor (with Paul Hutchinson and Karen Wimhurst) on the successful ‘Playing Playford’ courses at Halsway.
