It’s all about folk song, and it’s all in good company! Whether you want a damn good sing in the bar, to hear and share new songs, to improve your voice or to create songs of your own, this is the weekend for you.
Having hosted this weekend for several years, Tom & Barbara Brown have made the decision to step down; we’re delighted that Bob & Gill Berry have agreed to carry the flame, and lead this weekend with guest singers Jez Lowe and Emily Longhurst.
Singers of all ages (teenagers to pensioners) and abilities are welcome to join the fun, in the comfortable and relaxed surroundings of Halsway Manor. ‘Singin’ in the Bar’ (with everyone having a chance to lead chorus songs or share their favourites – if they want to) when the bar is open, and opportunities to explore songs and individual singing in between, learn how to look after your voice and performance, or have a ramble around the glorious countryside – it’s up to you! You’re welcome to bring accompanying instruments if you wish. The extensive folk library will also be open throughout the weekend should you wish to delve into the collection.
There’s also the option of staying on for the Sunday night: 5pm Leaders’ Concert, followed by supper and a Survivors’ Song Session!

“Camaraderie, support, inclusive, non-judgemental, helpful. The attendees and the tutors were wonderful people all intent on getting the most from the weekend.” Participant
Bob & Gill Berry are a duo that sing and play traditional and contemporary folk music and songs from the English tradition. They are particularly interested in their adopted county of Wiltshire and the surrounding counties for their music sources.
Emily Longhurst is a leader of songs and singing and believes that singing is a natural, beneficial and essential thing for everyone to enjoy. Em runs a number of singing groups including the South Downs Folk Singers and a shanty crew. If you’ve never experienced the joy of losing your own voice amongst other people’s or found out how to temper your voice to blend when everyone is singing together then this is where Em takes you a step beyond just developing your own voice.
Jez Lowe is one of the most highly regarded writer of songs on the scene today. From the sublime to the ridiculous, he writes the songs that everybody else wants to sing. With a wry, off-beat sense of humour and a cryptic view of life, Jez’s workshops are a joy to be at even if you are not trying to write material yourself – but here is where to explore the tricks of the trade and develop your own talents.
