We all admire the grotesques and gargoyles that adorn the churches and cathedrals throughout the country and wonder at the imagination and skill of the carvers. In Somerset they are known as “Hunky Punks” and many can be found here at Halsway Manor. In celebration of this we have invited sculptor Kate Semple to teach a course where participants can design and make their own “Hunky Punk” to take home. Kate guides students step by step through the tools and techniques of the ancient art of stone carving, helping you create and execute your design.
Please note this is a three day course which will begin at 10am on Friday morning.
Who’s it For?
All ages and abilities are welcome. Everything is supplied, the only things required are stout shoes and enthusiasm.
Kate’s life working with stone began over 25 years ago. She started as a stone mason for Wells Cathedral, then later became self employed to explore the possibilities of making sculpture and going back to her roots in art. Since then she has made large public sculpture and smaller works for exhibition and has taught stone carving for more than fifteen years. Kate also runs Elysium Memorials, a business where she collaborates with other artists and craftspeople to make artworks for the home and garden in memory of a loved one.
