During this 4.5 day practical course you will receive tuition and guidance through all stages of Irish frame drum manufacture right up to completing your very own Bodhrán. We shall aim to complete one drum per participant to your own specification of 15, 17 or 18” diameter, and you will be able to select the type of skin you would like for your drum (eg. goat or calf), as well as choosing from a variety of rim finishes.

We will also have a green woodworking tutor here throughout the week, introducing you to basic green woodworking skills and guiding you through the process of making your own tipper/beater to complete your project!

Plus of course, there’s time to relax and socialise in the evenings – bring instruments and prepare to have fun!

“Mog is a highly talented craftsman and gifted teacher. He is methodical; organized; explains each stage very clearly, and has a knack for gently inspiring confidence in each person on the course whatever their ability, or experience with wood working and power tools (in my case very little – others quite proficient. This didn’t seem to matter a bit). Mog gives each student a lot of personal attention so that at each stage he is sure everyone’s drum is of a high standard before commencing the next stage.” Previous Course Participant

Who’s it For?

Anyone! You might be a player, an enthusiast, or want a new challenge. No experience necessary, Mog & Ollie will provide excellent support for all abilities. The course is limited to six participants so everyone is guaranteed to receive the support they need. Materials and tools are provided, along with a good quality bag for your completed drum – and a tipper if you don’t have time to make your own.

The Team

Walk into any folk festival around England – and beyond – and the chances are you will see a Renegade Rhythms Bodhrán being played on the stages or in the sessions. Renegade Rhythms has become one of the most respected names in Bodhrán manufacture and Mog (the man behind it all) has for many years welcomed players and enthusiasts alike to his Norfolk home to learn how to create their very own beautiful, hand-crafted Renegade Rhythms Bodhrán.

The sound of the Renegade Rhythm bodhran can be heard as far afield as Canada, Australia, USA, Japan and all over Europe. We have supplied drums to: Four Men and A Dog, Celtica, Steafan Hannigan (Band of Hope, Sin É Lammas), Mat Fox (Barely Works), Clann McPeake, Celtarabia, La Musgana, Porterhouse, Junction, Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention), Aimée Leonard (Anam), Waulk Electrik, John Joe Kelly (Flook), Mike Harding , Seikou Keita, Edward (II), Tommy Hayes and Lisa Gallant (Slainte Mhath).
